Think Clearly. Choose Wisely. Live Boldly.
How human-centered design shaped Sama Life for busy professionals and changemakers ready to transform knowing about mindfulness into living skillfully
When I set out to bring together my years of work with Know Your Mind and the framework from my book, "Return to Mindfulness," into a unified brand, I knew I needed more than just another design agency. As someone who's navigated both heated town council meetings and silent meditation retreats, I understood the gap between cushion and conference room all too well.
I needed a process that would honor this complexity—one that wouldn't just create a pretty website but would truly listen to the people wrestling with this same gap every day. That's why I chose to work with
, founder of TRU2U, for their human-centered TRUbranding process—to understand what busy professionals need and co-create solutions grounded in their real experiences and challenges. You're Not Alone in the Struggle Between Knowing and Doing
If you've ever left a meditation session feeling peaceful, only to lose your center in the first challenging email, you understand the core problem we're solving. The participants in our TRUbranding workshop—busy professionals like you—didn't hold back about what we're all facing:
Information bombardment that makes presence feel impossible
Overwhelm from mindfulness itself—too many newsletters, apps, and events adding to the very stress they're meant to reduce
The commodification of mindfulness into just another thing to buy
The gap between reading about mindfulness and actually living it
But here's what emerged: we don't need to escape our lives to live skillfully. These workshop participants—executives, educators, scientists, changemakers—confirmed that what's needed isn't more retreat time or another subscription, but practical skills for the boardroom, the family dinner, the difficult conversation.
A Framework Validated by Science, Practice, and Community
After years of developing this framework—to return to clarity, listen within, and begin with the right combination of mindfulness skills—sitting in that workshop and hearing participants validate its real-world relevance was deeply moving. Not because I needed external validation, but because it confirmed what I've witnessed again and again: people are hungry for a systematic approach to mindfulness that actually works in their daily lives.
These eight core skills are rooted in ancient mindfulness texts, validated by modern psychology and neuroscience, and—most importantly—proven through lived experience, both mine and hundreds of my clients:
Awareness, Compassion, Curiosity, Energy, Joy, Inner Calm, Focus, and Equanimity
What struck me most was how participants immediately grasped that this isn't another random collection of wellness tips. It's a systematic framework—each skill building on the others, disrupting default habits, creating a foundation for genuine transformation. The energy was palpable as groups envisioned concrete applications:
Connecting young people who feel isolated or depressed through practical, everyday mindfulness skills to help them flourish
Supporting leaders and decision-makers to access clarity, compassion, and calm—transforming how they lead
Integrating mindfulness into health clubs and gyms to address our mental fitness alongside physical fitness
As participants noted, these aren't skills for the meditation cushion—they're for the conference table, the parenting challenge, the social justice work you're called to do. Each group saw how these skills could transform their specific challenges into opportunities for collective growth.
From Isolated Practice to Supported Journey
When workshop participants shared their experiences with mindfulness offerings, a clear theme emerged: many felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of apps, newsletters, and solo practices, yet still felt alone in their journey. Through our human-centered design process, we discovered Sama Life's guiding principles—the superpowers that make us who we are:
Community - Because transformation happens in relationship, not isolation
Human Potential - Recognizing the capacity in each person, individually and collectively
Transformation - Moving beyond stress reduction to genuine, sustainable change
Life Skills - Practical tools that work in boardrooms and living rooms alike
Invitation - Meeting each person where they are, without "shoulding" or guilt
Intention - Helping us respond thoughtfully rather than react automatically
The brilliant visual artist Peter Durand captured these insights in real-time, creating a roadmap that shows: we're not meant to do this alone. These principles shape everything we're building, from our podcast conversations to our community offerings. We're disrupting the default of isolated, app-based practice—which has its own value in sustaining practice—with real connection and collective wisdom.
Own Our Wisdom Without Losing Our Humility
Perhaps my biggest personal breakthrough was accepting that I need to stand at the center of this work. For years, I've deflected, always pointing to my teachers, the teachings, the community. But the workshop participants helped me see something crucial:
Owning our expertise isn't ego when held with genuine humility. I can lead Sama Life while honoring the hundreds of teachers who've shared their wisdom, my parents who supported this journey, and the community that makes practice possible.
This matters for all of us. How often do we minimize our wisdom, our experience, our unique contribution? Living boldly means claiming our place in the world while staying connected to what grounds us.
Beyond Stress Reduction: A Framework for Skillful Decision-Making
"Sama" means skillful in Sanskrit. The evolution of our tagline—from "Mindful Living by Design" to "Think Clearly. Choose Wisely. Live Boldly."—reflects what we actually need as busy professionals:
Think Clearly - See things as they actually are, without biases and default habits hijacking our experience
Choose Wisely - Make decisions that consider the wellbeing of all those impacted by our choices, not just reduce our stress
Live Boldly - Have the courage to stand in integrity, even amid uncertainty and systemic pressures
This is what sets Sama Life apart from typical secular mindfulness programs. I've seen it too often—we become less stressed but keep making the same old decisions. The eight mindfulness skills shift our entire decision-making process, expanding our circle of consideration beyond just personal comfort.
The new Sama Life platform offers more than quick fixes or "McMindfulness." We're building sustainable transformation through:
Expanding Skills & Practices - Evidence-based approaches that go beyond traditional meditation
Real-World Integration - Skills that work in your actual life, not just on a cushion
Collective Impact - Moving from "me" to "we," recognizing how personal choices ripple outward
Inclusive Approaches - Making skillful living accessible regardless of background or resources
Whether through our podcast featuring professionals disrupting harmful defaults, QR-linked products that prompt micro-practices, or community support for navigating systemic pressures while staying true to your values—everything is designed to help you build lasting change that creates ripple effects in your organization and community.
What Support Do You Need?
As we build this platform for busy changemakers, your voice matters:
What would help you integrate mindfulness into your daily activities, not separate from them?
Which situations challenge your ability to stay centered?
What everyday objects or moments could serve as cues for micropractices in the middle of your day?
What would support you in this journey?
The TRUbranding process showed me that solutions emerge from collective wisdom. Your insights will shape how Sama Life serves professionals and changemakers who refuse to separate their practice from their purposeful actions.
With Gratitude
Deep thanks to MJ for facilitating a process that allowed us to listen, and to Peter Durand for visual synthesis that captured not just our words but the spirit of what we're building together.
And to the workshop participants—my friends, colleagues, and clients who showed up with such generosity—I am profoundly grateful. I'm typically hesitant to ask for help, but this process required your participation, and you brought so much more nuance and clarity to Sama Life's potential. Thank you for your time, your wisdom, and especially your courage to speak uncomfortable truths. You transformed what could have been just another branding exercise into something real and meaningful.
