World Meditation Day: A Micro-Practice to Offer Goodwill to All

The ripple effects of a loving kindness practice

Today on World Meditation Day, I drew a random daily reminder card from Return to Mindfulness on Deckible that couldn't have been more perfect: "Offer goodwill to all."

With our 8-week class starting today based on my book, I chose to extend loving-kindness meditation to all of us embarking on this journey together. There was something deeply nourishing about slowing down and resting my mind on these simple wishes of wellbeing.

I know the skeptics among us might wonder: "What's the point of just thinking good wishes? What actual good can they do?"

But what if our thoughts—when infused with our full presence—really do make a difference?

I believe they do. They change us first, then those immediately around us, and then ripple outward in ways we may never fully see. This is mindfulness in action. When we connect with our innate capacity for compassion, we create conditions for inner calm that allows us to naturally stay open to opportunities to express it through our speech and actions.

Our kindness becomes less of a forced obligation and more our natural way of being in the world. After this morning's practice, I felt genuinely motivated and energized to show up fully as I prepare for our class today. The difference was palpable.

How about you? What insights emerged from your micro-practice today? Did you encounter any challenges?

Remember, the more we return to these micro-practices throughout our day, the stronger our ability to be mindful in the real world. That's how we change—and ultimately, how we change the world.
